All eyes were on Luis Suarez's return for Liverpool after a 10-match ban but Javier Hernandez stole the show with a brilliantly improvised finish to send Manchester United through to the Capital One Cup fourth round at the expense of their great rivals.

Suarez finally made his first appearance of the new season after serving his punishment for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic last term.

And while the Uruguay striker - loudly booed by the Old Trafford crowd - turned in a lively performance, it was Chicharito who settled the contest and provided David Moyes with a priceless win following the 4-1 humiliation in Sunday's Manchester derby.

Liverpool dominated much of the match and Daniel Sturridge wasted several good opportunities to seriously threaten United's goal, but Hernandez clinically took the one chance that came his way.

Wayne Rooney, by far United's best player, sent in a corner straight after the half-time break, and the unmarked Hernandez scored with a brilliant improvised volley.
